Everything You Need To Know About Starting at Final Round

Around this time of year when everyone is getting back in routines, getting back to the gym or trying a new sport Final Round usually gets lots of new members. Here’s everything you need to know if you just got a membership or you are thinking of joining. If I forgot anything let me know my contact info is below!

  1. You Should Do An Orientation: An orientation is a workout with a coach either 1on1 or in a group where we go over a basic workout, show you the basic skills, how to wrap your hands and how to use heavy bags etc.  After an orientation you are good to go if you want to use the gym on your own or you want to do boxing / conditioning classes.
  2. Equipment: You need to get hand wraps and gloves. Depending on your membership package you might get these with your membership but you’ll need you OWN set of gloves (Sharing gloves or wraps is kind of like sharing a gym shirt … you can do it …but who would want to?)
  3.  Training: At Final Round you can train by yourself, with friends or in a class. Classes are by far the most popular but classes alone should compliment a workout on your own or with friends 1-2/week.
  4. Personal Coaching:  Think you need a bit of extra help either developing skills or getting motivated. Final Round offers 1on1 training by certified coaches. All you have to do is ask and you can get a boxing coach to train you almost anytime.
  5. Pre Class: If you arrive before a workout make sure to first change and wrap up. If you are all set before a workout you should be warming up on your own, watching sparring or working out. Please don’t stand around … this gives us coaches migrates seeing people standing around looking into space so be productive with your gym time!
  6. Sparring: If you want to try sparing your first option is to spar with a coach. This will be guaranteed fun for you and the coach because it will be light and controlled. After you spar with  a coach or in a sparring class supervised with a coach you can spar with friends/other in the gym
  7. Cleanliness: Try and keep the gym as clean as you can but in the main gym area and in the change rooms. Lots of people use the gym so try and help out by being clean
  8. Registration:  There are some standard forms to fill out. So when you come for the first time come 15-20 mins early to take care of that.
  9. Payment: We take pretty much everything. Mastercard, Visa, Cash, Cheque

If you have any other questions about FRB you can email me directly matt@finalround.ca  or call the gym 613-248-0269. I’ve also written a bunch of posts on a variety of topics on this blog so scroll down for lots of info.

8 Things To Do Before a Class

At Final Round the majority of our members do boxing or fitness classes. While we encourage people to train on their own from time to time to compliment class training most people prefer group instruction. Classes come with guidance from coaches, a pre planned workout and a group to workout with so naturally this is a great way to train!

Before a boxing class however, it is all to common for those planning to attend to “stand around”. Here is a list of things that should be happening prior to a class. Standing around shouldn’t be an option!

- Warm up: While there is a formal warm up in the group setting this is typically done at a fast pace. Doing a light warm up prior to a class is a great idea.

- Practise: If you have done a class prior to the one you are waiting for, you probably did an exersise or a drill that you didn’t feel you had mastered 100%. This is the perfect time to practise either solo or with a partner.

- Stretch: Typically we try and make the most of our limited class time with instruction and workout time. You are expected to be stretched out prior to the class starting. If the ring is free jump in and get stretched out. If not use a mat.

- Watch Sparring: By watching sparring you will be entertained and be able to learn by watching.

- Wrap Up: Make sure you’re hands are well wrapped.

- Work on a new skill: Can you do rounds on the speed bag ? Cross overs while skipping ? Throw a great left hook ? Do perfect punch outs ? This is your chance to work on skills. Use your gym time effectively

- Workout: While we don’t encourage overtraining a class is only an hour and either a core/endurance circuit class or a boxing class. On circuit nights work on boxing skills before classes and vice a versa on boxing nights.

- Tell a funny story: Final Round is a fun place. If you have some entertaining news to share with those around you … go ahead and chat with the Final Round Team. Have fun

Ask for help: If you need help with a particular skill this is the time to grab a coach (if they are free), one of the competitive team members or someone more advanced and ask for help with anything you need. Everyone at Final Round (if they are free) is always happy to help

There is typically only one DO NOT. DO NOT stand around and do nothing.

How To Do Punch Outs 101

At Final Round and many other boxing gyms workouts finish with or include “punch outs”. These are typically either speed rounds or power rounds done in intervals with high intensity bursts followed by rest periods. While the goal of punch outs is usually endurance and building up a lactic acid threshold it’s important not to forget technique. In this post I want to outline most of the common mistakes and how to fix them.

Stance: Proper
Punch outs should be done from a regular boxing stance.

Common Mistake:
Standing to square to the bag: The shoulders should not be square to the bag but rather angled in a proper boxing stance position.

Footwork:
Proper
The boxer should be in their boxing stance with feet planted or standing slightly up on ones toes.

Common Mistake:
Too much bounce or jogging on the spot while doing punch outs. This limits the speed at which you are able to throw the punches and also isn’t how you would throw your punches while boxing.

Range:
Proper
The bag should be at the very end of the boxers punches. Arms should be at full extension on impact.

Common Mistake:
Standing to close to the bag: This is cheating ! It makes the drill way to easy, and does nothing to help when in a sparring situation. Punches should be long and full

Hands /Punches:
Proper
Hands should be held by the chin with the left hand held slightly higher than the right (for orthodox boxers). Punches should start at the chin travel to the bag at full extension then return to the chin. Punches should be “turned over” so that all the knuckles impact on the bag.

Height:
Proper
Boxers should be throwing their punches at their own eye height or slightly higher to get a maximum workout.
Common Mistake:
Throwing punches at chest height.
Next Time You’re at the Gym:

Practise the tips above. Feel free to ask me (Matt) or any of the other coaches to ensure you are doing this properly. With lots of people in the classes sometimes it is tough for the supervising coach to critique everyone. Don’t be shy to ask for help ! Also …the mirror is your friend. Starting slowly during non class times to practise is also a great way to get better.
